Space Shuttle Enterprise En Route to NYC on Jet

Look! Up in the sky! It’s a … space shuttle?

An unusual flying object left Washington for New York on Friday — the space shuttle Enterprise.

Enterprise is expected to get to the city riding on top of a modified jumbo jet. Its trip was to include low-altitude flyovers over parts of the city and landmarks including the Statue of Liberty and the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum on Manhattan’s west side.

The shuttle had been scheduled to arrive earlier in the week, but NASA pushed it back because of bad weather.

Onlookers bundled up in a blustery spring day to await the flyover along the Hudson River. Crowds gathered along piers, cameras slung around their necks.

The shuttle prototype was housed at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington but will soon be making its home at the Intrepid, where it will be “the largest and most significant space artifact in the entire Northeast,” said Susan Marenoff-Zausner, Intrepid’s president.

That won’t happen right away; after its fly-around, the Enterprise is heading to Kennedy Airport, where it will remain for a few weeks until it’s taken off the 747 jet it rode to New York.

After that, Marenoff-Zausner said, it will be put on a barge in early June and brought up the Hudson River to the Intrepid, where it will be put on the flight deck and a pavilion over it will be completed. The museum anticipates opening the shuttle exhibit to the public in mid-July.

“When somebody comes to visit, they will not only see the shuttle itself, but will have an engaging and interactive experience inside the pavilion,” she said.

Enterprise comes to New York as part of NASA’s process of wrapping up the shuttle program, which ended last summer. At the Smithsonian, its place has been taken by the shuttle Discovery. Shuttle Endeavor is going to Los Angeles and shuttle Atlantis is staying at Florida’s Kennedy Space Center.

Enterprise has never been used in an actual space mission, but was a full-scale test vehicle used for flights in the atmosphere and experiments on the ground.

That doesn’t make Intrepid any less excited about having it, Marenoff-Zausner said.

“This is an institution in American history,” she said, adding, “This tested so many different things that without it, travel into space would never have happened.”

She is confident the public will feel the same way and anticipates interest in the shuttle will increase the number of annual visitors by about 30 percent, to 1.3 million over the course of a year.

The public’s interest is what drove the Intrepid to find a way to display it even though a permanent display location still has to be found, Marenoff-Zausner said.

The initial plan was to leave it at the airport for a couple of years until its permanent home was set, she said, but “we want the public to be able to experience this immediately.”

In order to do that, Intrepid had to do some shuffling around of its collection. Last week, three aircraft were taken off the flight deck and sent to the Empire State Aerosciences Museum in Glenville, N.Y.

Lawyer: Zimmerman has raised $200,000 for defense

SANFORD, Fla. – The attorney for George Zimmerman said he didn’t know his client had raised $200,000 before a bond hearing last week.
Mark O’Mara told the judge Friday that Zimmerman’s family hadn’t informed him about the money before his client was granted $150,000 bond.
Florida Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester said he wanted to know more information about the money and what Zimmerman knew before deciding whether to revoke or raise his bond. He said he would to that at a hearing after O’Mara gathers the information.
Zimmerman is accused of second-degree murder for the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. The case has drawn national attention because Zimmerman was a neighborhood watch volunteer when he shot Martin, who was unarmed.
Zimmerman wasn’t charged for more than six weeks because he claimed self-defense.

Romney Sweep Pressures Gingrich

Mitt Romney swept Tuesday’s five Republican primaries, all but eliminating any remaining doubt that he will be the Republican candidate to face President Obama in November — though closest rival Newt Gingrich remains in the race for now.
Romney, who for weeks has been turning his campaign’s focus toward the general election, continued to refine his pitch for ending Obama’s presidency after one term.
“Everywhere I go, Americans are tired of being tired, and many of those who are fortunate enough to have a job are working harder for less,” Romney said from Manchester, N.H., near where he started his campaign in June. “To all of you, I have a simple message: Hold on a little longer. A better America begins tonight.”
Romney won easily in Connecticut, Delaware, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.
Gingrich desperately trails by every marker – including the delegate count, campaign money and primary or caucus victories. He spent extensive time in Delaware with hopes that a strong showing might keep his campaign alive.
A staffer indicated Tuesday afternoon that Gingrich would “reassess” after Tuesday’s voting. However, the former House speaker told about 150 supporters in Concord, N.C., after the polls closed only that he would take a realistic look at his campaign over the next couple of days and that the five-state defeat was a “clear enough” indicator about his future.
“I think every conservative in this country has to be committed to defeating Barack Obama, and let’s be very clear about this,” he said.
Gingrich, who won only the South Carolina and Georgia primaries, has vowed to stay in the race until the GOP convention in August, but his campaign is carrying more than $4.3 million in debt and has been spending more money than it’s raising.
Romney needs to reach 1,144 delegates to clinch the nomination outright. Though that goal was unattainable Tuesday, the victories essentially made it mathematically impossible for either Gingrich or Texas Rep. Ron Paul to reach that number, based an Associated Press tally.
A total of 209 delegates were at stake Tuesday.
The latest AP tally has Romney at 739 delegates, Gingrich at 137 and Paul at 75. Rick Santorum had 260 delegates before he suspended his campaign earlier this month.
On the Democratic side, President Obama was expected to formally clinch his nomination on Tuesday — achieving the needed 2,778 delegates by the time polls closed. Not that there was ever any doubt, as the Democratic primary was uncontested.

Pentagon Confirms Plan to Create New Spy Agency

The Pentagon confirmed Tuesday that it is carving out a brand new spy agency expected to include several hundred officers focused on intelligence gathering around the world.
At a time of budget cutbacks, particularly in the military, it’s unclear how the Defense Department has been able to move around the money to afford a new agency. The Pentagon wouldn’t get into specifics saying only that the so-called “Defense Clandestine Service” wouldn’t involve “significant new resource requirements.”
The service would be an offshoot of the Defense Intelligence Agency.
Officers drawn from that agency would be sent to beef up U.S. intelligence teams in areas that are now receiving more attention. They include Africa, where Al Qaeda is increasingly active, as well as parts of Asia, where the North Korean missile threat and Chinese military expansion are causing increasing U.S. concern.
Pentagon spokesman Capt. John Kirby called the new agency “complimentary, not in competition with” existing agencies — such as the CIA.
One unnamed official earlier told The Washington Post that the new service “does not involve new manpower” or “new authorities.”
Rather, it is shifting the emphasis of Pentagon intelligence gathering away from war zones.
Defense Department case officers already secretly gather intelligence across the globe on terrorism, weapons of mass destruction and other subjects, mostly working out of CIA stations in embassies and operating undercover like their CIA counterparts.
But an internal study by the Director of National Intelligence last year found the agency still focused more on its traditional mission of providing the military with intelligence in war zones and less on what’s called “national” intelligence — gathering and disseminating information on global issues and sharing that intelligence with other national security agencies, one official said.
The study also found that the Pentagon did not always reward clandestine service overseas with promotions, so its most experienced case officers often left for the CIA or switched to other career paths within the Pentagon.
The new service is intended to curb personnel losses, making clandestine work part of the Pentagon’s professional career track and rewarding those who prove successful at operating covertly overseas with further tours and promotions, like their CIA colleagues.
The case officers in the field — some military and some civilian — will answer directly to the top intelligence representative in their post, usually the CIA’s chief of station, in addition to serving their agency back home.
The changes were worked out by the top Pentagon intelligence official, Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence Michael Vickers, and his CIA counterpart who heads the National Clandestine Service, and communicated to Congress before Defense Secretary Leon Panetta approved the new program Friday.
Panetta is the former CIA director.
